Balkans

Balkan Language Initiative

Balkan Language InitiativeThe Balkan Language Initiative offers intensive, highly- individualized instruction in Albanian, Bosnian, Macedonian, and Serbian. Through homestays, conversation partners, in-class instruction, and a wide range of extracurricular activities, participants enjoy an unprecedented opportunity to immerse themselves in daily local life in a region largely unserved by study abroad programs.

  • Locations: Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Macedonia, Serbia
  • Academic Focus: Language Immersion and Area Studies
  • Program Periods: Fall, Spring, Academic Year, Summer (8 weeks)
  • Prerequisite: The equivalent of two semesters of the target language or a related language; good academic standing

Overseas Professional & Intercultural Training Program (OPIT)

Overseas Professional & Intercultural Training (OPIT) Program - InternshipsThrough OPIT’s six-week, English-language internships, students gain the substantive overseas professional experience and intercultural communication skills demanded by today’s global market. American Councils on-site staff arrange internships and provide ongoing support to participants. Internships in the fields of business, democracy-building, ecology, human rights, law, public health, journalism, and women’s issues are available throughout Eurasia and Southeast Europe. No foreign-language study is required.

  • Locations: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Macedonia, Moldova, Serbia, Ukraine
  • Academic Focus: various professional internship disciplines; intercultural skills
  • Program Period: Summer (6 weeks)
  • Prerequisite: good academic standing

Research

Combined Research & Language Training (CRLT) Program

Combine Research & Language Training (CRLT) ProgramCRLT provides full fellowship support to researchers seeking to conduct in-country, U.S. policy-relevant research for three to nine consecutive months. Additionally, researchers receive supplemental language instruction during their fellowships.

  • Location(s): Caucasus, Central Asia, Eastern Europe, Russia, Southeast Europe
  • Academic Focus: U.S. Policy-Relevant Research, Language Immersion
  • Prerequisite: Must be a graduate student, Ph.D. candidate, faculty member, or post-doctorate/independent scholar and a U.S. Citizen

Research Scholar Program

Research Scholar ProgramThe Research Scholar Program provides full fellowship support to researchers seeking to conduct in-country, U.S. policy-relevant research for three to nine consecutive months in the countries of Eastern Europe, Eurasia, and the Balkans.

  • Location(s): Caucasus, Central Asia, Eastern Europe, Russia, Southeast Europe
  • Academic Focus: U.S. Policy-Relevant Research
  • Prerequisite: Must be a graduate student, Ph.D. candidate, faculty member, or post-doctorate/independent scholar and a U.S. Citizen
